Trellis

One workflow for building and running systems

Install

$git clone https://github.com/wingedpig/trellis

Install command taken from the project's README or registry entry. Always review code before running it.

Trellis

Trellis is an AI-native development environment — a local web app where Claude Code and Codex sessions work alongside your terminals, services, logs, and distributed traces, all scoped to the git worktree you're working in. Your AI sessions can read the same production logs, traces, and crash reports you can, so investigations start from real data — and finished work is captured as a case, committed to git alongside the fix.

What Trellis Does

On your machine:

  • Treat each git worktree as its own environment with isolated terminals, processes, and logs
  • Run and supervise your app's services locally, with automatic restart when binaries change
  • Create and manage tmux sessions without manual layout management
  • Chat with Claude Code (or OpenAI Codex) directly in the web UI, with per-worktree sessions and transcript management
  • Watch every active AI session across every worktree in a floating session-inbox popup that highlights the one waiting on you
  • Pair two AI sessions into an automated implementer/reviewer loop, or run a checklist run that drives them through a multi-phase plan one reviewed phase at a time
  • Track work items (bugs, features, investigations) with cases that record notes, transcripts, trace reports, a per-commit timeline, and an auto-generated searchable summary
  • Run reverse proxies with path-based routing and TLS support to mirror production routing locally

Remote systems:

  • Open SSH terminals to staging/production from the same interface
  • Tail and search remote logs, including rotated and compressed files
  • Correlate requests across multiple hosts using trace IDs

Navigation:

  • Keyboard-first web UI with pickers for rapid context switching
  • Jump between worktrees, terminals, services, logs, Claude sessions, and workflows

Quick Start

Requirements

  • tmux — Terminal multiplexer for session management
  • Go 1.25+ — For building from source

Install

git clone https://github.com/wingedpig/trellis.git
cd trellis
make build

This creates two binaries in the repo root:

  • ./trellis — The main server
  • ./trellis-ctl — The CLI tool

Note: If you modify .qtpl template files, you'll need quicktemplate: go install github.com/valyala/quicktemplate/qtc@latest

Configure

Use trellis init to create a configuration file interactively:

cd your-project
./trellis init

Or create trellis.hjson manually in your project root:

{
  version: "1.0"

  project: {
    name: "myapp"
  }

  server: {
    port: 1234
  }

  services: [
    {
      name: "backend"
      command: "./bin/backend"
      watch_binary: "./bin/backend"
    }
  ]

  workflows: [
    {
      id: "build"
      name: "Build"
      command: ["make", "build"]
    }
  ]
}

Run

./trellis

Open http://localhost:1234 in your browser.

CLI

Use trellis-ctl to control Trellis from the command line:

./trellis-ctl status # Check service status
./trellis-ctl logs backend # View logs
./trellis-ctl workflow run build # Run a workflow
./trellis-ctl crash newest # View most recent crash
